Variations in reproduction and age structure in the North American river otter in North Carolina, USA

چکیده
Historically, the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis; otter) was distributed across Carolina, USA, but populations were decimated by early 1900s. Otter trapping prohibited in 1938, reopened 1947, and gradually expanded until it opened statewide 2005. Between 1986 1992, Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Great Smoky Mountains National Park released 404 otters to restore western Carolina. Our objective determine if age structure reproductive rates of throughout shifted from 1978 2018 between remnant reintroduced populations. During 1978–1980 (period 1; Coastal Plain) 2009–2013 2014–2016 2; statewide) seasons, we collected 1,439 carcasses licensed trappers, fur buyers, wildlife damage control agents 3 Furbearer Management Units (FMUs) 14 basins We conducted necropsies, used cementum annuli lower canine for analysis, counted corpora lutea fetuses fecundity estimates. Age distributions all skewed toward younger classes did not differ collection periods. period 1, adults Plain had higher counts than during 2, whereas yearlings juveniles numbers 2. differed among FMUs; Mountain FMU (x̄ = 2.56) 1.62) or Piedmont 1.91). Within pooling classes, increased 45% 1 Adult declined 16% while began reproducing periods, indicating that reproduction has 2018.

Nephrolithiasis in free-ranging North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) in North Carolina, USA.
The North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) serves as an indicator species for environmental monitoring, is prized as a valuable furbearer, and is a popular display animal in zoologic collections. Nephrolithiasis has been reported as a frequent problem in other free-ranging and captive otter species but is rarely reported in North American river otters. In this study, we compared the pre...

For North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) in Louisiana, statewide distribution, availability of aquatic habitats, and the absence of physical barriers to dispersal might suggest that they exist as a large, panmictic population. However, the wide variety of habitat types in this region, and the dynamic nature of these habitats over time, could potentially structure river otter populati...
متن کاملScale-dependent Factors Affecting North American River Otter Distribution in the Midwest
—The North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) is recovering from near extirpation throughout much of its range. Although reintroductions, trapping regulations and habitat improvements have led to the reestablishment of river otters in the Midwest, little is known about how their distribution is influenced by localand landscape-scale habitat. We conducted river otter sign surveys from Jan....
متن کاملRunning energetics of the North American river otter: do short legs necessarily reduce efficiency on land?
Semi-aquatic mammals move between two very different media (air and water), and are subject to a greater range of physical forces (gravity, buoyancy, drag) than obligate swimmers or runners. This versatility is associated with morphological compromises that often lead to elevated locomotor energetic costs when compared to fully aquatic or terrestrial species. To understand the basis of these di...
